Neptune Day

Last night at 3:30AM we crossed the equator. Therefore, today was Neptune Day. No classes were held today because it was quite a day full of events. We were woken up this morning by loud banging drums and whistles running through the hallways. The crew was dressed up in white robe like costumes with gold trimming. Their faces were painted in various colors and they all were carrying some sort of fake weapon such as a spear, sword or shield. They were making ruckus and dancing in a line up and down the hallways. It was pretty amusing. The entire student body was present on the top deck near the pool, where they presented the Dean and his assistants as Neptune the God of the sea and various other Greek mythological gods. They came out in a ceremonial style while all 600 or so students reached above one another to get a good picture. They explained the story of Neptune and how it is a right of passage that when you cross the equator for the first time you must be soiled in fish guts, kiss a fish, and have your head shaved. I’ve never seen so many people so eager to get drenched in fish guts. I waited my turn patiently and then:

After people got soaked in the “Fish Guts” (it was really just some sort of fish oil and/or colored liquid) people jumped in the pool to rinse off. Or at least try to…the salt water pool and “Fish Guts” didn’t taste very good:

After I set up my camera and tri-pod and got my head shaved! It was alittle weird since I hadn’t had a baldhead since senior year of high school. This is me Eagon, a CU kid who was a walk on receiver for a year a while back.

Believe it or not all sorts of girls got their heads shaved too. I thought they all looked like Shinad O’Conor:

One girl even let me shave her head. That was fun:

After getting used to the shaved head for a while, I decided to head to the salon where they were offering a clean up job for 5 bucks. I decided to get rid of the beard as well. So now I’m completely hairless! I still haven’t gotten used to it. But hopefully it will grow back soon!

At first I was totally against shaving my head, but how many times in your life are you going to get the opportunity to partake in an even like this? Not many. Plus it will be great to include in my film. I might look like a Mexican, but I’m glad I got to experience Neptune Day.

It's a little "techy" for me. Maybe once we have the bambino, I can post stuff on there?

Hi Nicholas....hehehehe,I think you look cute...just like my balding husband. That's awesome that those girls shaved their heads too, that takes some guts (or fish guts!). We have really enjoyed reading your journal, keep it coming. It sounds like you are having an amazing trip, keep enjoying it! ~Brooke
